- MJA> Sorry for skipping the rest of your article. I do underline what you
- MJA> said and just try to put it in simpler words:
-
- MJA> MUI is - for a NORMAL Amiga system - much too slow, needs too many
- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
- Ie, an A500 with 1MB of RAM running Kick 2.0 and a standard 68000/7MHz
- processor and no harddrive.
-
- MJA> resources and does NOT suit everyone's taste. You CAN do the same with
- MJA> the original software (gadtools) and just have to put a few more
- MJA> minutes into development. So - again I am saying the same as you AFAIK
- ^^^^^^^
- I think you should measure this in weeks, not minutes, atleast if you want to
- do the SAME as MUI is doing.
-
- MJA> - you can concentrate on porting/writing GOOD software and don't have
- MJA> to concentrate on doing weired graphical stuff that nearly 50% of all
- MJA> Amiga users simply don't want (talking of MUI again).
-
- MUI actually saves you the trouble of doing weird graphical stuff, or didn't
- anybody tell you that even if you write a plain and simple 'old-style' crappy
- GadTools GUI that it will STILL take more time to do that then to use MUI?
- Yes, making a GUI with MUI takes very little time, it makes creating a GUI
- easy, you see it is not only better (I use the term loosely) on the user's
- side, it is also a big improvement over GadTools/Intuition at the programmer's
- side.
-
- This 50% is also a nice figure, I wonder where you got that. I personally
- wouldn't even dare to guess what percentage of Amiga users likes/dislikes MUI,
- or simply doesn't care. I bet though that the people disliking it will be
- generally the ones with the 'NORMAL Amiga System', see above.
-
- MJA> It's that simple: MUI is a GOOD system (just like Windows for a DOS PC
- MJA> is a real improvement) and gives you nearly the same disadvantages. It
- MJA> slows down ALL of your applications, it comes with a childish look and
- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
- How can you say that when MUI can look anyway you like it? And you're talking
- complete nonsense as it certainly doesn't slow down ALL applications.
-
- MJA> so on. MANY people LOVE it. Many don't.
-
- MJA> So in my eyes it is NOT understandable that AT will release software
-
- I think it is, they need to get this web-surfer pack out NOW, not in 2 months
- when they finally have written their own *MODERN* GUI, which is easy to use
- (help-bubbles for first-time users for example) and so on...
-
- MJA> that requires Amiga-Windows-Clones like MUI. Don't bother me with mails
- MJA> a'la "MUI is nothing like Windows" - I know it is not. But it is the
- MJA> same line of history: putting some weired GUI to a system, making
- MJA> developers use it and REALLY wasting lots of computing power - and
- MJA> MANPOWER for that.
-
- It is truly incredible that Amiga users are whining about wasting memory and
- cpu-power. If there is ANY system out there which can afford to waste a bit of
- memory and CPU power then it is the Amiga. It for god's sake IS the most
- efficient computer out there when it comes to resource usage, and all we do is
- complain that program X could have been 20 bytes shorter if you wrote it in ASM
- and so on...
-
- MJA> If you have an 68060 or similar you can play around with MUI very
- MJA> nice. If you don't... get yourself LOTS of coffee.
-
- Sure, why don't you exaggerate it a bit more? It might help to enhance your
- little fantasy.
-
- MJA> DON'T bother me with answers like "MUI is much faster in V3.xxx". It
- MJA> simply isn't.
-
- Oh, but it is! Much faster in fact.
-
- MJA> Go ahead - have a look on applications with MUI on a plain Amiga 1200
- MJA> as it will be shiped as InterNet Bundle by AT. It ISN'T USABEL AT ALL
- MJA> for someone who works with Amiga from the very beginning. It is damned
- MJA> slow.
-
- If you define someone who works with Amiga from the very beginning as the
- typical non-upgrading A500 user then you're probably right. Those people
- deserve to be left behind. It makes no sense to try and please people who
- don't want to keep up with the times, just leave them behind and concentrate on
- the people more willing to make sacrifices.
-
- MJA> Besides: putting a 14400 Modem to the bundle is a real joke in my
- MJA> eyes. Especially here in Germany where phone costs are incredably high
- MJA> this bundle is a pain!
-
- That's probably the only part I could agree with you on in this post.
